Hiking the Majestic Mount Ebulobo

Nagekeo, Boawae, Ebulobo 4 Days

Mount Ebulobo is one of the most striking volcanoes on Flores Island, rising to about 2,124 meters above sea level. Located near the town of Boawae in Nagekeo Regency, this active stratovolcano is easily recognized by its almost perfectly symmetrical cone shape. For travelers, Ebulobo offers not only a physical challenge but also a deep sense of connection with nature and local culture. The mountain holds spiritual significance for nearby communities, who often regard it with respect and perform traditional rituals linked to its presence.

What makes Mount Ebulobo particularly appealing to hikers is the diversity of its landscape. The trek typically begins through cultivated lands and gradually transitions into dense forest filled with native flora and birdlife. As climbers ascend higher, the vegetation thins out, revealing dramatic volcanic terrain and panoramic views of Flores, including distant mountains and the Savu Sea. Reaching the summit rewards hikers with a breathtaking sunrise experience, where the sky glows over a vast expanse of islands and ocean. The active crater, often emitting smoke, adds a sense of adventure and reminds visitors of the mountain’s powerful natural forces.

Climbing Mount Ebulobo is highly recommended for those seeking an authentic and less crowded trekking experience compared to more famous Indonesian peaks. The journey usually takes around 4–6 hours depending on the chosen route and fitness level, making it accessible yet still rewarding. Local guides are strongly recommended, as they not only ensure safety but also share stories about the mountain’s history and cultural meaning. For visitors, this trek is not just about reaching the top—it is about experiencing the raw beauty of Flores, engaging with local traditions, and gaining a memorable adventure that combines nature, culture, and personal achievement.

Here is a 4-day travel itinerary to explore Mount Ebulobo, starting and ending in Labuan Bajo. This plan combines adventure, culture, and scenic destinations across Flores.

Day 1: Labuan Bajo → Bajawa (En Route Stops: Desa Todo & Sawah Lodok)

Morning: Depart Labuan Bajo early (around 6–7 AM) after breakfast. Drive east 4 hours to "Desa Todo" (Todo Traditional Village, Manggarai Regency). Explore this historic Manggarai village with its communal traditional houses (Mbaru Niang), megalithic stones, and views over green valleys. Learn about local culture and Dutch colonial history.

Midday: Continue 1–1.5 hours to "Sawah Lodok" (Spider Web Rice Fields / Lingko in Cancar, near Ruteng). Marvel at the unique circular, spider-web-patterned rice terraces – a centuries-old Manggarai farming tradition. Best viewed from the viewpoint hill; short walk or photo stops. Lunch nearby.

Afternoon: Drive ~4–5 hours to Bajawa. Arrive in the cool highlands of Ngada Regency by late afternoon/evening. Check into your guesthouse/hotel, relax with a hot drink, and enjoy views of Mount Inerie.

Overnight: Bajawa.

Day 2: Full Day Exploring Bajawa Tourist Destinations

Morning: Visit "Bena Traditional Village". One of Flores most iconic megalithic Ngada villages at the foot of Mount Inerie. See traditional thatched houses, ancestral stone monuments (ngadhu and bhaga), and vibrant local life.

Midday: Head to "Bukit Avatar" (Avatar Hill / Watu Nari Wowo, near Langa/Beja). Hike the short trail for breathtaking 360° panoramic views of Mount Inerie, rolling savannas, and surrounding volcanoes. Perfect for photos – it resembles scenes from the movie "Avatar".

Afternoon: Relax at "Air Panas Soa" (Mengeruda Hot Springs, 25 km north of Bajawa in Soa). Soak in natural sulfur-rich hot pools believed to have healing properties. Surrounded by mountains – a perfect chill spot.

Evening: Return to Bajawa for dinner (try local coffee or arak if adventurous) and rest.

Overnight: Bajawa.

Day 3: Mount Ebulobo Climb + Desa Kawa (Boawae Area)
Theme: The main highlight – volcano trekking + traditional village in Nagekeo Regency.

Early Morning (depart 4 AM): Drive 1.5 hours east from Bajawa to Boawae Continue to the trailhead at Mulakoli village (near Boawae). Register at the village office (small fee) and hire a local guide.

Hike Mount Ebulobo (2,124 m): Steady 2–3 hour ascent through coffee plantations and lush forest, then a final steep rocky push above the treeline to the active crater rim. Enjoy panoramic views of north and south Flores coasts, other volcanoes, and surrounding hills on a clear day. Descent: 1.5 hours. Total round-trip hike 4 hours. Return to Boawae by early afternoon.

Afternoon: Short drive/transfer to "Desa Kawa" (Kawa Traditional Village, Aesesa District, Nagekeo 7 km off the main road from Boawae area, short walk). Explore this authentic, lesser-visited Ngada-style village with traditional houses, rice paddies, and serene highland views. Experience local culture and perhaps a sunset if timing allows.

Evening: Drive back to Bajawa. Rest and celebrate the climb!

Overnight: Bajawa.

Day 4: Bajawa → Labuan Bajo (Return)
Theme: Relaxed return with time to reflect on the adventure.

Morning: Enjoy a leisurely breakfast in Bajawa with final highland views. Depart around 7–8 AM.

Drive back: Direct return to Labuan Bajo (8 hours, same route in reverse). You can make quick photo stops if desired (e.g., revisit a favorite viewpoint), but the focus is a safe, comfortable journey. Stop for lunch en route (e.g., near Ruteng).

Evening: Arrive Labuan Bajo by late evening. End your trip with dinner overlooking the harbor or prepare for any onward plans.
